How To Clean A Mirror Without Harsh Chemicals

When it comes to cleaning, it is well known that Windex is a frequently used product. Nevertheless, even though Windex is a great cleaning product, it contains ammonia which causes irritation to the eyes, skin, and lungs.

These days, we have become self-aware of all the chemicals used in our cleaning supplies and the harm that can cause to our health. Can we reduce the risk of health problems? Here are a couple of easy homemade options that are less harmful than Windex and that can get the job done.

Method #1. Rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol solution is the best for removing visible grime or gunk like dried toothpaste.

  1. You will need a large spray bottle to combine the ingredients.
  2. Start by pouring 1/4 cup (60 mL / 2 oz) of 70% concentrated rubbing alcohol into a 24 oz spray bottle.
  3. Now, add 2 cups (480 mL / 16 oz) of distilled water to mix with the rubbing alcohol.
  4. Lastly, mix in ½ cup (120 mL / 4 oz) of vinegar (white or apple cider).
  5. Optional: You can add a few drops of the essential oil of your preference or fresh lemon.
  6. After covering it with the lid, eagerly shake the bottle to mix all of the ingredients.
  7. Make sure to label your bottle and store it in a dark, cool place.

Note: If your home does not run on hard water, you may use tap water.

Method #2. White vinegar

The vinegar solution is the best for quick cleaning of your mirrors.

  1. Use a large spray bottle to mix the ingredients.
  2. Start by pouring 1 cup (240 mL / 8 oz) of white vinegar into a 16 oz spray bottle.
  3. Now, add 1 cup (240 mL / 8 oz) of distilled water to mix with the white vinegar.
  4. Optional: Add a few drops of the essential oil of your preference or fresh lemon.
  5. Mix the ingredients well by shaking the bottle.
  6. Make sure to label your bottle and store it in a dark, cool place.

Note: If your home does not run on hard water, you may use tap water.

How to use your cleaning solution

Now that we have our solution ready let’s get down to business.

  1. Spot the grimy areas: Check for gunk-like toothpaste or any other hardened substances that might have splashed and dried on your mirror.
  2. Remove spots: If there are spots with visible gunk or smears, spray your rubbing alcohol solution on a cloth or cotton ball, or pad to make it lightly soaked and begin to rub until it’s clean.
  3. Spray solution on cloth: Spray your cleaning solution (vinegar or alcohol solution) onto your cloth a couple of times, making sure it is not soaking wet to avoid making more streaks on your mirror.

Note: You can use paper towels or soft material fabrics to clean your mirrors, but microfiber cloths are always the best.

  1. S-pattern technique: Make sure to wipe the entire mirror in an S-pattern from left to right and top to bottom for better results.

Note: Circular motions leave dust and debris from the cloth back to the mirror.
